Yellow, blue, purple, brown color, why do nano tungsten oxide have different colors

June 30,2020.

Nano tungsten oxide is a powder metallurgy raw material for producing cemented carbide and tungsten products. Tungsten carbide, cemented carbide, super-hard molds, tungsten bars, tungsten wires, etc. are all manufactured by powder metallurgy. They can also be used for x-ray screens and fireproof fabrics, as well as ceramic colorants and analytical reagents.

In the W-O system, there are WO3, WO2.9, WO2.72, WO2 and other different colors of nano-tungsten oxide. WO3 (yellow)-wo2.90 (blue)-wo2.72 (purple)-WO2 (brown)-W (gray and black). In other words, tungsten has four stable oxides: yellow oxide (WO3), blue oxide (WO2.90), purple oxide (WO2.72) and brown oxide (WO2).

Blue tungsten oxide refers to a series of non-monolithic oxides of tungsten. The chemical formula is represented by WOx, mainly WO2.9. Blue tungsten oxide is used to produce tungsten powder, doped tungsten powder, tungsten rods and cemented carbide, UV resistance, photocatalysis, etc. The blue tungsten oxide changes color when it sees light, turning into a light blue. If you put it in an opaque black bag, it will change to its original color.

Nano tungsten trioxide is lemon yellow powder, density 7.2-7.4g/cm3, melting point is about 1470 C, boiling point is 1700-2000 C, sublimation is obviously higher than 800 C. The heat of formation of tungsten trioxide is 202.8 calories/mol. Tungstic anhydride is slightly soluble in water (0.2g/L) and insoluble in all inorganic acids except hydrofluoric acid. Tungstic acid is easily soluble in caustic alkali solution (NaOH or KOH) and ammonia water to form tungstic acid [NaWO4, K2WO4 and (NH4) 2WO4]. Tungsten trioxide dissolves slowly in ammonia solution, and dissolves slowly when heated to high temperature. Tungsten trioxide is easily reduced by various reducing agents. At room temperature, even a small amount of organic matter can restore it and change its color. But after heating in the air, the color will return to the original color. Tungsten trioxide is easily reduced to metal tungsten by hydrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon at 700~900℃.

Nano tungsten dioxide is a brown chocolate powder sensitive to moisture. When heated, the color changes from bright to dark, to dark orange, and it still returns to the original color after cooling. The density is 10.9-11.1 g/cm3, the boiling point is about 1700 C, the heat is 134 kcal/mole, and the hydrogen reduces tungsten trioxide to tungsten dioxide at 575-600 C. Tungsten dioxide is insoluble in water, alkaline solution, hydrochloric acid and dilute sulfuric acid. Nitric acid can oxidize tungsten dioxide into high-priced oxides. Tungsten dioxide is quickly oxidized to tungsten trioxide in the air, and turns into blue oxide when heated to 500°C in nitric oxide. Powdered purple tungsten oxide (WO2.72) reduces the tungsten trioxide with hydrogen or carbon monoxide at 250-300℃, and heats the tungsten trioxide to 200-250℃ in vacuum to obtain powdered purple tungsten oxide (WO2.72) .

Special uses of nano tungsten oxide:

1) Gas sensing and catalysis, especially photocatalysis.
2) Solar photosensitive film.
3) High-grade pigments, oil paints and watercolors.
4) X-ray protection and fireproof fabrics.
Doping of tungsten-doped modified materials.
6) Gas sensing materials.

7) The main and auxiliary catalysts in the petrochemical industry. Hydrodehydrogenation, oxidation, hydrocarbon isomerization, alkylation and other reactions have good catalytic performance and are commonly used catalysts in the petrochemical industry.
