Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative joint disease that can lead to severe pain, motor dysfunction, and even disability. An increasing number of studies have shown that improving the imbalance of gut microbiota in OA and increasing the content of active metabolites (SCFAs) can further alleviate clinical symptoms and delay the progression of the disease.

On April 8, 2024, the Journal of Nanobiology reported on the mechanism by which Au nanoparticles improve excessive bone loss by altering the gut microbiota during the development of osteoporosis (OP) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
Researchers observed that Au nanoparticles significantly reduced OA induced by anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) in a gut microbiota dependent manner. 16S rDNA gene sequencing showed that Au nanoparticles altered the diversity and structure of gut microbiota, manifested by an increase in Akkermansia and lactobacillus abundance.
In addition, Au nanoparticles also increase the content of SCFAs (such as butyric acid), which improve bone destruction by reducing inflammatory response. It is worth noting that Au nanoparticles regulate the dynamic balance of M1/M2 macrophages and increase serum levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-10.

This study indicates that Au nanoparticles play an anti osteoarthritis role by regulating the interaction between the "microbiota gut joint" axis, providing a promising approach for the treatment of osteoarthritis.
